Keep the Change, Ya Filthy Animal
One of the most memorable moments of “Home Alone” is when Kevin orders pizza. I decided to combine my love of that movie, pizza and holiday food leftovers to make a dish that is equally memorable.
This vegan, gluten-free holiday leftovers pizza recipe makes 1 large pizza. You can decide how many servings this is.
Note that this recipe is firmly based on the idea that your ingredients will already be cooked since this is for leftovers. If you need to make mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy and/or cranberry sauce from scratch, this recipe will be a little more laborious. You can find basic recipes for mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing here.
Ingredients
4 cups vegan mashed potatoes
2 cups vegan, gluten-free gravy
7-8 ounces vegan, gluten-free “turkey” roast or “chicken” cutlets, cubed or shredded
1 cup green beans
0.5 cups cranberry sauce
1 cup vegan, gluten-free stuffing
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a large rectangular baking sheet.
Press your mashed potatoes into the baking sheet so they are flat.
Bake the potatoes so they begin to get crispy, about 20 minutes.
Spread the gravy over the top of the solid potato layer.
Add the fake meat (use a loaf-style vegan meat, not deli slices). You could also replace this with some precooked tofu (follow what I did with the tofu in my pot pie recipe).
Sprinkle the green beans alongside the vegan meat.
Dollop the cranberry sauce all over the pizza.
I will say, all of the ingredients I chose are based on what I like and what my family historically ate for Thanksgiving. If you’re more of a (mock) duck or (vegan) ham family, use that instead of the vegan turkey or chicken.
The same goes for any of the sides. If your family does green bean casserole, you could use that instead of gravy and green beans. The only requirement is the potatoes for the crust.
Bake for 10 minutes then add the stuffing (broken into small pieces). Bake for another 2 minutes.
Slice into squares (we wound up with 15 squares in our large pan). Let it cool for about 5 minutes on the pan so the slices can retain their crispness.
Serve and enjoy with “Home Alone!”
The Easy Route
If you don’t have plans for a big holiday meal and don’t feel like taking the steps to make all the components, you can buy premade cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing and/or mashed potatoes. We used canned cranberry sauce for ours.

The Pairing
I am a child of the 1990s and grew up watching “Home Alone” on repeat. It is a continued tradition as one of my nephews now requests to watch it each year.
Through a series of mishaps, Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally home alone for Christmas after his family embarks on a trip to Paris.
Things go sideways when a pair of burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) set their sights on his house, believing the entire family is on vacation.
Kevin gives the burglars more than they bargained for through a series of clever booby traps.
“Home Alone” absolutely holds up nearly 35 years after its release. Culkin is absolutely perfect as Kevin, as are Pesci and Stern as Harry and Marv.
And you cannot forget Catherine O’Hara in her iconic role as Kevin’s mom.
Perhaps one of the lesser-recognized folks involved in this film is director Chris Columbus. His name isn’t spoken as much as legends like Steven Spielberg or Ridley Scott, but Columbus is responsible for an insane list of my childhood staples, including “Home Alone,” “Home Alone 2,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Stepmom” and the first two “Harry Potter” films.
If you haven’t seen the first two “Home Alone” movies, I highly recommend adding them to your holiday season rotation. (The other sequels can safely be skipped.)
