“Heads of State” is another movie I went into rather blind. From the cast and title, I assumed it was an action comedy where someone plays the president, and I was right!

John Cena stars as an action movie star who recently became president of the United States, while Idris Elba plays the British prime minister. They get caught up in the plot of an arms dealer (Paddy Considine).

If you think you’ve seen or heard of a movie like this before, you have. There is nothing new in the plot of “Heads of State,” and it ultimately is not very memorable.

While Cena and Elba are pretty much going through the motions, I did think Priyanka Chopra Jonas brought a breath of fresh air as a spy who knows Elba’s character and is also caught up in the arms dealer’s plot.

At the midpoint of 2025, this is my eighth middling action film, with about half of them being action comedies. I think it’s time for the studios to make something better or ditch the genre for a while in favor of uh, I dunno, maybe romcoms? But that’s just some wishful thinking on my part, I know.
