“Palm Royale” (Season Two, 2025)

While season one relied more on comedy, season two of “Palm Royale” really goes for full melodrama, for better or worse.

Kristen Wiig, Ricky Martin, Allison Janney, Leslie Bibb and the rest of this ensemble are well suited to this, but at times, it feels like Wiig is just in a longer version of one of her “Saturday Night Live” skits that really isn’t that funny.

This vanishing of a lot of the comedy makes the second season a bit of a slog to get through, but I still found myself wanting to know what happens in this wild melodrama, much like I got into modern takes on telenovelas like “Ugly Betty” and “Jane the Virgin.”

This melodrama harkens back to the era in which “Palm Royale” takes place, dabbling in the plots of early soap operas and Douglas Sirk movies.

While I mostly enjoyed this second season, it definitely is not for everyone, and if you were on the fence after season one, you can probably skip season two.
