A Storied Butter Board
Along with “Christmas Vacation,” “A Christmas Story” is one of those movies I find myself watching every holiday season.
We went pretty traditional for our last few holiday movie pairings, so we decided to try something newer for this one: a butter board.
Our board is vegan, and you can keep it gluten-free if you use vegan bread and crackers with it. This recipe makes 4 “servings.”
What new food trends are you trying out this holiday season? Let us know in the comments.
Ingredients
4 tablespoons vegan butter, softened
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
0.25 cups chopped pecans
7-8 small mint leaves
For Dipping
baguette
crisps/crackers
Instructions
Make sure your butter is soft and spreadable. You don’t want it to be too soft, though.
Spread the butter across the board.
Mix the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Once the cinnamon sugar is evenly mixed, dust it over the top of the butter.
Form a border around the outside of the butter spread with mint leaves.
Carefully drop the chopped pecans in the center of the butter board.
Slice your baguette, then arrange the slices and your crisps/crackers around the outside of the butter spread. We used a gluten-free baguette and some maple cinnamon crisps.
Enjoy your board! Maybe pair it with a glass of Ovaltine (or the vegan equivalent)?
To be honest, both of us were a little skeptical about this whole butter board trend, but after eating this while rewatching “A Christmas Story,” we are definitely on board with it.
The Easy Route
You could also just spread all of these ingredients on some toast and not go for the full board experience.
I’m sure some shops and restaurants might be jumping on this trend for the holidays so you could have options for someone making this for you.
The Pairing
As a child of the ’80s, “A Christmas Story” is a movie I’ve seen countless times. From the first glimpse of the Red Ryder BB gun to Ralphie in the bunny suit, I probably have the plot pretty well memorized.
If you haven’t seen it, the movie follows Ralphie (Peter Billingsley), a young boy in the 1940s who obsessively wants one thing and one thing only for Christmas: a Red Ryder air rifle.
The movie shows his entire holiday season, from wrapping up school alongside friends and bullies before Christmas break to the big day with his parents (Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin) and brother, Randy (Ian Petrella).
Billingsley is just so perfect as Ralphie, and his performance is well-complemented by Jean Shepherd doing the voiceover as an older Ralphie. Shepherd also wrote the movie and was well known prior to the film for his radio work.
If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend checking it out this year. TBS and/or TNT usually air it for 24 hours every Christmas.
