Dear Snack People
In the TV version of “Dear White People,” a group of characters frequently come together to watch their favorite TV shows and share snacks, including popcorn.
One of my favorite TV-watching snacks is the classic savory-sweet combination of popcorn and coated chocolate candy, and this 1 “serving” recipe is vegan and gluten-free.
Ingredients
1 “serving” vegan, gluten-free popcorn of your choice (find inspiration here)
1 “serving” vegan, gluten-free coated chocolate candy of your choice
Instructions
Get a bowl that will fit what you consider to be one serving of popcorn with one serving of coated chocolate candy. Whether that’s a whole bag of popcorn and a whole bag of candy or just a couple cups of popcorn and a handful of candy (or any other combination) is up to you. I’m not here to judge.
My choices for flavors in these photos are elote popcorn and dark chocolate crispy quinoa candy.
Pour most of the popcorn into the bowl, then pour the candy on top, followed by the rest of the popcorn.
Do not shake the bowl, as that will result in all the candy sinking to the bottom.
Eat and enjoy with “Dear White People,” just like the characters on the show do!
The Easy Route
It honestly doesn’t get much easier than this, especially if you’re using a pre-popped, pre-seasoned popcorn.
If you know of a company that sells chocolate candy and popcorn pre-packaged together, please drop it in the comments.
The Pairing
I loved the movie “Dear White People,” so when I heard filmmaker Justin Simien was adapting it into a TV show, I was sold.
Both the show and the movie follow a group of Black students navigating the very white world of an ivy league college.
The movie and the show both meet the world we live in full of racism with grace, humor, wit and anger, sometimes all at the same time.
The show’s four seasons did a lot of world building beyond what a two-hour movie can do, so while I love both, I do have to say I appreciate the show more.
While there is a very strong ensemble cast, the series hones in on Samantha (Logan Browning), a film student working as a DJ, and Lionel (DeRon Horton), a shy, awkward journalism student.
As I studied film and journalism in college, I found both Sam and Lionel to be immensely relatable in addition to some of the environments they find themselves in.
The show also does deep dive episodes with other members of the superb ensemble, which includes Brandon P. Bell as Troy, Marque Richardson as Reggie, Ashley Blaine Featherson as Joelle and Antoinette Robertson as Coco.
I’ve seen some folks argue that the show jumped the shark a little in its musical, fast-forwarding final season, but I absolutely disagree. First, I love musicals, and second, I loved seeing the show’s take on what the future will look like in general and what life will look like for the characters beyond college, where the show is firmly set throughout its four fantastic seasons.
