James Bond Martinis

Since this post is a James Bond double feature, we have two options for martinis, the Dr. Notini and the Shaken Not Stirred.

In doing our research for this pairing, we found that the first time 007 drinks a martini is in the first movie, “Dr. No.” It’s made with limes, so that’s how we crafted our Dr. Notini recipe.

Our research also revealed that the first time the iconic “shaken not stirred” line was uttered was in “Goldfinger.” So we went with a more traditional olive-garnished martini for the second round.

Each recipe makes 1 martini.

Dr. Notini Ingredients
3 ounces vodka
1 ounce vermouth
half a lime, cut into wedges
ice cubes

Dr. Notini Instructions
Put the ice, vodka and vermouth into your cocktail shaker.

Squeeze all but 1 of the lime wedges into the shaker and then toss in the used peels to add more lime flavor. Reserve 1 lime wedge to garnish your drink.

Cover the shaker and shake it up!

Pour the martini into your glass, and place the remaining lime wedge on the rim to garnish.

Shaken Not Stirred Ingredients
3 ounces vodka
1 ounce vermouth
ice cubes
green olives to garnish

Shaken Not Stirred Instructions
Dump the ice, vodka and vermouth into your cocktail shaker. Cover and shake!

Pour the cocktail into a glass.

Put three olives on a toothpick and garnish your drink.

Cheers!

The Easy Route
Depending on where you live, you may be able to get an expertly shaken martini delivered straight to your door. Pre-made cocktails in a can or bottle are becoming increasingly popular, so you may be able to grab a pre-made martini from your favorite liquor store or grocery store.

The Pairing
The James Bond series is one of my favorite film franchises, and it has been for as long as I can remember. So much so that I decided to write a big research paper on it for a high school English class.

Just like the “Fast & Furious” franchise (which we posted about last month), the James Bond series provides a great amount of escapism and mind-boggling stunts, especially in its origins.

Sean Connery originated the role with “Dr. No,” “Thunderball” and “Goldfinger,” among other Bond movies. He established what Bond has come to represent for the last 60 years, both good and bad.

There are the fun gadgets and chase scenes, but there’s also the misogyny and toxic masculinity. While there are definitely toxic stereotypes reinforced by the 007 films, I will point out that Bond has always seemed to have a weak spot to protect the women in his life.

This plays out to varying degrees throughout the series, especially in the more recent Daniel Craig Bond movies.

I anticipate there might be more James Bond pairings in the future. Since “Dr. No” and “Goldfinger” are both Connery Bond movies, I imagine I might try to break it up by actor.

Which 007 actor is your favorite? What food or drink would you pair with their movies? Let us know in the comments.
