Love Guac’tually

“Rye Lane” has a scene involving burritos and a memorable cameo, so I am leaning into that for my pairing.

This vegan spicy burrito recipe makes 1 serving, but can easily be multiplied to make with your loved ones. It can be made gluten-free if you use a gluten-free tortilla and gluten-free vegan meat.

Ingredients
0.25 cups white rice (uncooked)
2.5 ounces vegan steak, chopped into bite-sized pieces
0.25 cups black beans
1 tablespoon hot sauce
2 tablespoons pepperoncini
0.5 tablespoons freeze-dried or fresh cilantro
0.25 cups vegan cheddar cheese, shredded
1 burrito-sized vegan, gluten-free tortilla
2 tablespoons spicy guacamole
1 tablespoon vegan sour cream

Instructions
Cook your rice according to the packaging instructions. I generally put twice as much water as I do rice when cooking it as a rule of thumb.

Once the rice is cooked, stir in the vegan steak, black beans, hot sauce, pepperoncini, cilantro and shredded cheese.

When everything is mixed and heated, it’s ready for the burrito!

If you use a gluten-free tortilla, heating it before filling it is key to make it easy to shape without cracking, and it is also a nice touch for a regular tortilla. Heat your tortilla in the microwave for 30 seconds to make it more pliable. If you are heating more than 2 tortillas, I recommend microwaving for a minute.

Put the filling in the tortilla. Add guacamole and sour cream.

Wrap it up and enjoy with “Rye Lane!”

The Easy Route
You might be able to find a pre-cooked bean and rice packet to make that part a little easier. Otherwise, this is already a fairly easy recipe, especially when you consider that I found pre-chopped steak and bought shredded cheese.

The Pairing
I immediately fell in love with “Rye Lane” when it premiered on Hulu two years ago. It is the perfect Valentine’s Day watch for me: a short and sweet romcom that has a bit of an edge.

The amazing chemistry between Yas (Vivian Oparah) and Dom (David Jonsson) kicks off with an awkward meet cute featuring him crying in the bathroom at an art show, which she bears witness to.

They wind up bonding over recent bad breakups and spend a day together enacting revenge on their exes together.

Many a romcom have told similar stories, but “Rye Lane” stands above the rest by making Yas and Dom so relatable. I love R-rated romcoms for this reason. If you don’t, “Rye Lane” may not be for you.

I am looking forward to what director Raine Allen-Miller does next, romcom or not.
