Omelette Makers in the Building
The first episode of “Only Murders in the Building” features Steve Martin’s character making an omelette, plating it and promptly dumping it in the trash.
We don’t like to waste food, so you’ll be making a tasty omelette, plating it and promptly eating it while watching an episode or two of the show.
This vegetarian and gluten-free omelette recipe makes 1 serving (1 omelette). As you will see from some of our pictures, we doubled it when testing it to make two omelettes.
Ingredients
2 eggs, scrambled
0.25 teaspoons salt
0.25 teaspoons pepper
0.5 medium avocado, chopped
0.5 cups bell peppers, diced
0.25 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
Scramble the two eggs in a bowl with the salt and pepper.
Stir in the shredded cheese, chopped avocado and diced bell peppers. For the peppers, you can use whatever color(s) you like. We used green, yellow, orange and red to make our omelette colorful.
Evenly coat a large skillet or frying pan with oil or cooking spray. We experimented with a smaller pan as well and discovered the omelette turns out much better in a larger pan.
Heat the pan over medium heat then pour in the egg mixture evenly across the pan.
Cook until it sets then curl up the edges with a silicone spatula and push the raw bits to the edge so they cook.
Allow the omelette to cook until the very top of it is just slightly gooey. Then fold the omelette and move it onto a plate for eating!
(We like ours cooked a little more, hence the brown and lovely appearance.)
The Easy Route
Order an omelette for takeout or delivery from your favorite local diner.
One way to make the prep easier at home is buying prepared ingredients such as cubed avocado (sold frozen), diced peppers and shredded cheese.
The Pairing
We already knew Steve Martin and Martin Short have remarkable chemistry from their movies and comedy bits together. But who knew that when you add in Selena Gomez you would get quite a terrific trio?!
In “Only Murders in the Building,” the three of them play residents of the Arconia, a storied apartment building in New York City. Martin plays Charles, a fading actor; Short plays Oliver, a bankrupt theatre director; and Gomez plays Mabel, an artist living in her aunt’s abandoned apartment.
In the first episode, they discover they have a shared love for murder podcasts and are listening to the same series when the fire alarm goes off in the building, forcing them to take refuge in a nearby restaurant.
When they return to the building, they discover another resident has been murdered. Given their bond over their favorite podcast, the three of them begin some amateur sleuthing and wind up turning their investigation into a podcast (also called “Only Murders in the Building”).
The first season was absolutely fantastic, and the second season exceeded all expectations (the last episode was released on Hulu last month).
The show, which was co-created by Martin and John Hoffman, strikes just the right balance of comedy and mystery.
It also does a great job of weaving in tiny details and backstories to make it a rich story full of nuance. Naturally, these details are vividly laid out for Oliver, Mabel and Charles.
But the show also takes the time to linger on some other Arconia residents, from Sting playing a version of himself to making an entirely quiet episode to reflect the experience of a deaf resident.
Like I said at the start, the chemistry between the three leads is amazing and makes you keep watching.
I can’t wait for the third season to watch the continuing misadventures of Mabel, Charles and Oliver.
