Rutherford Arrangement

One of the characters on “Rutherford Falls” is obsessed with bouquets of fruit, so that was a clear choice for my pairing.

The arrangement and the optional dipping sauce are vegan, gluten-free and soy-free. We made 4 skewers, which was adequate for 2 people, as was the quantity of the dipping sauce.

Ingredients
watermelon
cantaloupe
strawberries
blueberries

Optional Dipping Sauce
1 bar vegan, gluten-free white chocolate
1.5 tablespoons vegan vanilla creamer

Instructions
You will need some cookie cutters, toothpicks, skewers and a vase to make this arrangement. Ideally, the cookie cutters should be flower-shaped, but circles, stars and other shapes work as well.

We don’t have flower-shaped cutters, so I used two of my circle cutters and one small diamond-shaped cutter for ours.

We cut 4 big circles of watermelon that are 1 inch thick, 4 smaller circles of cantaloupe that are half an inch thick and 16 small diamonds of cantaloupe that are also half an inch thick. I also sliced 4 strawberries into circles (roughly a quarter inch thick) and used the top/widest circle for each skewer.

Additionally, you will need 4 blueberries, 4 skewers and 16 toothpicks to make an arrangement like ours.

Start by assembling the sun-shaped “flowers.” Put each toothpick into one of the cantaloupe diamonds with the end sticking out. Place the exposed end of the toothpicks from four of the diamonds in one of the cantaloupe circles so they are evenly distributed on all 4 sides to form what looks like a sun.

Put the skewer through the middle of the watermelon circle.

The cantaloupe sun comes next on the skewer.

Then top the cantaloupe with a strawberry slice, followed by a blueberry.

As you place the blueberry, adjust the skewer so the tip is not visible, staying inside of the blueberry.

Repeat the assembly steps for the 3 remaining skewers.

Arrange all 4 “flowers” in your vase, and give it to a friend or family member. Or treat yourself to a fresh bouquet!

We went an extra step and made vegan, gluten-free white chocolate fondue as a dip for our fruit. To make the fondue, place the chocolate bar and 1.5 tablespoons of creamer in your fondue pot and turn it on low. (If you don’t have a fondue pot, you can make this by microwaving the chocolate in a bowl for 30-second increments and stirring in the creamer after it’s melted.)

As the chocolate starts to melt, use a silicone spatula to mix it with the creamer.

Dip and drizzle your fruit then enjoy an episode of “Rutherford Falls!”

The Easy Route
Buying pre-cut fruit would definitely put you at an advantage here. You could also buy a premade white chocolate sauce for dipping.

Of course, you can also order an arrangement like this to be delivered to your door.

The Pairing
“Rutherford Falls” is an excellent show, and I am so sad it was cut short after two outstanding seasons.

Ed Helms is fantastic as Nathan Rutherford, going beyond the funny one-note roles he’s had in other projects like “The Office” and “The Hangover” movies.

But the real star of the show is Jana Schmieding as Reagan, the curator of the Minishonka Cultural Center and Nathan’s best friend.

I will say, if you love “Parks and Recreation” anywhere near as much as I do, I can guarantee that you will enjoy “Rutherford Falls.” The characters in this show have to jump through a lot of bureaucracy to get things going, just like Leslie Knope and friends.

In addition to Schmieding and Helms, supporting actors including Michael Greyeyes as Terry, Jesse Leigh as Bobbie, Dana L. Wells as Diedre and Dallas Goldtooth as Nelson help make “Rutherford Falls” must-see TV.
