Spider-Manwich

Especially in the Tom Holland “Spider-Man” movies, we see Spidey eating a fair amount, including a sandwich from a beloved local bodega.

We chose to make a Cuban sandwich but veg it up with entirely vegan and gluten-free ingredients. Plus, instead of traditional pickles, we chose pickled banana peppers.

Yes, Spider-Manwich is the official name of this sandwich, but the full name is “Spider-Manwich, or Peter Parker Picked a Pack of Pickled Peppers.” Because you can’t ever go too far with puns or alliteration.

This makes 2 sandwiches. You can decide whether or not that means 2 servings.

Ingredients
2 gluten-free, vegan deli rolls, sliced open
2 tablespoons vegan maple dijon salad dressing
8 slices vegan ham
4 slices vegan cheese
18 slices pickled banana peppers

Instructions
Slice open your rolls and spread the maple dijon salad dressing on the inside, top and bottom. If you don’t have this specific type of spread, you can also use a combination of mustard and vegan mayo.

Place the ham and cheese in the rolls, then top with the banana peppers.

In a lightly oiled or nonstick frying pan, heat up the sandwiches until the cheese starts to melt, flattening them down so they’re ready for on-the-go eating.

We find it’s best to fry them for a few minutes and then microwave them for 30 seconds for peak gooey goodness with the cheese.

Time to eat and watch your favorite “Spider-Man” movie!

The Easy Route
This sandwich is pretty dang easy to begin with, but if you can find a restaurant near you that makes a vegan, gluten-free Cuban sandwich for takeout or delivery, go for it! (And share the name of the place in the comments.)

The Pairing
It was quite the internal debate when it came to which “Spider-Man” movie to pick for this pairing, wavering between the first Tobey Maguire movie and the last Holland one, “No Way Home.”

I’ve loved this series of movies since I was a nerd in high school, much like Peter and his pals. I have seen all of them in the theater and found some value in all of them, from the Maguire days to the Andrew Garfield period to Holland’s current reign.

I am going with “No Way Home,” but I ultimately think you could pair this recipe with whichever “Spider-Man” movie you like the most.

Of course, in order to fully appreciate “No Way Home,” I do think it’s necessary for you to have seen all of the previous films.

With assistance from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Peter Parker (Holland) finds himself immersed in the multiverse in “No Way Home.” Not only do we see past villains including Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) pop up, fans of the series are rewarded with seeing our two previous Peter Parkers (Maguire & Garfield) pop up and join forces with Holland’s Peter/Spider-Man.

While Kirsten Dunst (Maguire-era Mary Jane), James Franco (Maguire-era Harry) and Emma Stone (Garfield-era Gwen Stacy) all gave memorable performances in their respective eras, I do really love the current camaraderie between Holland’s Peter, MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). This trio and their chemistry keep me coming back for more.

And no shade to Rosemary Harris and Sally Field (I love them both), but Marisa Tomei is pretty damn perfect as Aunt May.
