Stay Puft Creepy Crispy Treats
The original “Ghostbusters” movies are childhood staples, and I’ve loved the two more recent entries, especially the mini Stay Puft creatures in “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.”
When that movie came out last year, I was putting the pieces together of what I wanted Veg Out to be. I made my first recipe video when I made the first attempt at these Stay Puft Creepy Crispy Treats.
I added chia seeds due to their black color, a perfect touch for a Halloween dessert. This take on the classic rice crispy treats is vegan, low FODMAP and gluten-free, making 12 “servings.”
Ingredients
3 tablespoons vegan butter
1 10-ounce bag vegan mini marshmallows
6 cups puffed rice cereal
0.75 cups chia seeds
Instructions
Grease a 9×13 pan to put the treats into.
Melt the butter in a pan over medium heat, then add in the marshmallows. I recommend using a silicone spatula to stir them as the marshmallows won’t stick to it.
Once the marshmallows are melted, remove the pot from the heat.
Stir in the puffed rice cereal and chia seeds until all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed. (Note: I prefer my crispy treats to be on the crunchier side. If you like your treats to be more gooey, drop down to 5 cups of puffed rice cereal.)
Pour the mixture into the greased pan and flatten it out with the spatula.
Let the treats cool for 10-20 minutes then slice and serve! Eat them while watching your favorite “Ghostbusters” movie.
The Easy Route
Find a local bakery that makes vegan, gluten-free crispy treats. You might not be able to find any with chia seeds on them, though.
The Pairing
As I said above, I loved the original “Ghostbusters” movies as a kid. They are classics!
But for this pairing, I’m going to go with “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which I feel was very underrated.
It very clearly threw back to memories of the original films while introducing viewers to new characters.
One of the new characters is Mr. Grooberson, played by Paul Rudd. I recommend watching for his performance alone.
The movie stars Mckenna Grace as Phoebe. Carrie Coons plays her mom, Callie, and Finn Wolfhard plays her brother, Trevor.
After Phoebe’s estranged grandfather mysteriously dies, her family goes to his decrepit old house in the middle of nowhere to see what can be sold, as they are broke.
Mr. Grooberson enters the scene as a science teacher and paranormal expert who also quickly becomes a love interest for Callie.
While I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to have seen the original movies to get enjoyment out of “Afterlife,” this film does reward franchise fans with little Easter eggs here and there. As I mentioned above, the mini Stay Puft creatures taking over a store is one of my favorite sequences in the movie.
They are the reason why I went with mini marshmallows for this recipe!
