Dairy-Free Dinner Dinner and a Show Gluten-Free Lactose-Free TV Vegan Vegetarian

Taqueria Time

In “Gentefied,” three cousins come together to help their grandfather’s taqueria stay afloat, so tacos were an easy pairing for this show.

This vegan, gluten-free recipe makes 2 “servings” or 4 tacos.

Ingredients
4 soft corn taco tortillas
2 servings soy chorizo
0.5 cups vegan cheese, shredded
1 avocado, sliced
0.25 cups vegan sour cream
fresh cilantro
1 lime, cut into wedges

Instructions
Heat your tortillas in your nonstick skillet as you warm it up for your chorizo.

Place the tortillas on your plates and put the chorizo in your skillet.

Stir the chorizo until it is thoroughly heated then place it on top of your tortillas.

Sprinkle some shredded vegan cheese over the top of the chorizo. We used cheddar.

Put 3-4 slices of avocado on each taco, followed by a small dollop of sour cream on top.

Finish it off with a few leaves of cilantro (dried cilantro works, too) and put the wedges of lime to the side of each plate, 1 wedge for each taco.

Squeeze the lime juice onto the tacos just before you take a bite.

Enjoy with “Gentefied!” A lime margarita or lime sparkling water are both great options to wash down the tacos.

The Easy Route
You can heat the tortillas and chorizo in the microwave if you don’t want to use a skillet.

One easy step we took was buying shredded cheddar. Another topping shortcut is to get precut avocado slices or cubes.

If you have a taqueria or restaurant near you that sells vegan chorizo tacos, please share those details in the comments.

The Pairing
“Gentefied” can be added to the list of shows that were canceled too soon. But the two seasons it did get are simply glorious.

As I mentioned up top, the show follows the Morales cousins, Ana (Karrie Martin), Chris (Carlos Santos) and Erik (Joseph Julian Soria), as they help their grandfather, Casimiro (Joaquín Cosío), run his Los Angeles restaurant and fight off gentrification.

There is some conflict among the family, too, as Chris, an aspiring chef, wants to use his culinary training to update the restaurant’s menu.

All four of the leads in this show get their moments to shine, but Cosío’s Casimiro is the heart and soul of “Gentefied,” making you feel the joy, anger, love and heartbreak he experiences in each episode.

For me, one of the other standouts in this ensemble cast is Annie Gonzalez as Erik’s love interest, Lidia. She is outstanding in every scene she’s in.

This show introduced me to most of these actors and the showrunners, Martin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez. I was heartbroken when I heard “Gentefied” was canceled, but I know the talent in front of and behind the camera will only continue to create captivating stories.

There are only 18 episodes of this show, making it very easy to binge watch quickly, something I’d highly recommend.
