The Devil’s Advocate’s Eggs

Deviled eggs were an Easter staple for me growing up. The traditional mustard, mayo and paprika recipe is great, but swapping them out for hummus has been my favorite way to make them as an adult.

When I was a teenager, “The Devil’s Advocate” was one of those movies I had to watch every time it came on TV, so this pairing came to me rather quickly.

More on the movie after the recipe, which is gluten-free and dairy-free.

Ingredients
6 hard boiled eggs, sliced in half
6 tablespoons red pepper hummus
6 teaspoons relish
chives (fresh & chopped or dried), to garnish (optional)

Instructions
This recipe serves three people. Feel free to double, triple, etc., for a bigger crowd.

If you’re using fresh eggs, hard boil them, peel off the shell and then chill them for at least an hour.

Slice the hard boiled eggs in half. Scoop out the yolks and put them in a bowl.

Add the hummus and relish to the bowl and mix them together with the egg yolks.

You can use any hummus you like. I prefer red pepper hummus to give it a nice color and a little spice.

Scoop the filling into the hollowed out eggs. You can also use a piping bag if you’re fancy like that.

Sprinkle with chives to garnish. Eat and enjoy!

The Easy Route
Given that I bought precooked eggs with their shells already removed, this recipe is about as easy as it gets. Of course, you also can order pre-made deviled eggs for takeout or delivery.

The Pairing
Hours before I made these eggs, “The Devil’s Advocate” randomly came up in conversation with some friends. We agreed that it isn’t the world’s best movie, but it is a lot of fun if you don’t take it too seriously.

Keanu Reeves is one of the icons of my teenage years between this, “The Matrix” and some romance movies.

He stars in “The Devil’s Advocate” as Kevin Lomax, a hotshot young attorney who is a new hire at a firm led by the larger-than-life John Milton, a charismatic and devious Al Pacino in all his glory.

You will also spot Charlize Theron in one of her first big roles as Kevin’s wife, Mary Ann. Rounding out the main cast, you’ll find Judith Ivey in a memorable role as Kevin’s mother, Alice, and Connie Nielsen as Christabella Andreoli, another lawyer at the firm.

Kevin and Mary Ann find themselves intrigued by all the benefits of wealth that come with his new position, but they quickly discover that the firm has a dark side and John isn’t exactly who they thought he was.

I won’t go into all the plot points or spoilers, don’t worry.

The best scenes of the movie are when filmmaker Taylor Hackford allows Pacino to go full throttle, highlighting the power of both his over-the-top moments and his quiet moments of intensity.

The pairing of Reeves and Theron was solid, and I also enjoyed their subsequent team up a few years later, the romance “Sweet November.” It’s another one I’ve watched quite a few times even though it isn’t that great.

But back to “The Devil’s Advocate.” If you’re looking for a supernatural thriller for a couple hours of escapism, this is your movie. Plus you get Pacino in all his gusto-filled glory. What more could you ask for?
