“Hold Your Breath” (2024)
I came to “Hold Your Breath” for Sarah Paulson, and I got what I came for, not much more.
Paulson plays Margaret Bellum, a woman trying to keep her family and community together in the midst of egregious storms in the 1930s Dust Bowl. It is made pretty clear from the beginning that there also might be some supernatural elements at play in the disastrous consequences of the storms as well.
I have not seen any promos for this one, but I knew almost from the start how this film would end. It is not exactly subtle in its “twist.”
It does play an interesting balance between supernatural horror and psychological thriller, leaving you a little on edge about why this torment is happening and who is responsible, if only momentarily.
I love Paulson and she is one of the best scream queens working today, but she honestly just seems to be going through the motions a bit in this one.
If you need a Halloween watch with Paulson, rewatching one of her seasons of “American Horror Story” would be a better bet.
