“Mother Mary” (2026)

Anne Hathaway kicks off her generational run this year (stay tuned for “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” “The Odyssey,” “The End of Oak Street” & “Verity” before we even hit the last quarter) with a haunting tale of fame and trauma in “Mother Mary.”

When I heard that Michaela Coel was going to be her co-star in this psychological drama with tinges of horror, I was sold. I knew the vibes would be immaculate between the two of them and the premise.

I was correct, the aura of this movie is mesmerizing in an off-putting way with some of the most stunning visuals of the year. However, there isn’t much more to this horrifying fable about a pop star (Hathaway) and her former costume designer and closest friend (Coel).

I ultimately left the theater with more questions than I had when I walked in, which can be a good thing if a movie is thought-provoking. While “Mother Mary” does provoke some thoughts in that manner, some of the questions I’m left with feel more like plot holes than grandiose ideas.
