“Nightbitch” (2024)
“Nightbitch” is a thoughtful reflection on motherhood and being a woman with a body horror twist. Where films like “The Substance” are more heightened, “Nightbitch” feels more realistic despite it being about a woman who may or may not be turning into a dog.
Amy Adams is incredible as a stay-at-home mom who previously had some success as a visual artist.
Scoot McNairy also gives a moving performance as her husband, naturally portraying some of the cluelessness men can have about women go through on a daily basis.
I also loved seeing “Suspiria” (1977) star Jessica Harper pop up in a surprisingly key supporting role as a librarian.
To me, the most compelling part of “Nightbitch” is the story. Filmmaker Marielle Heller delivers an excellent adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s novel.
It draws on the complexities of being a woman in today’s society while also tying in some mythological aspects. I am not a mother, but I still got a lot out of this story and found it to be very relatable. I know the mothers in my life would probably love it, too, if they’re up for some nontraditional storytelling.
