“Smile 2” (2024)
“Smile 2” is the latest in a string of 2024 fame monster movies, including “MaXXXine” and “The Substance.” (I could even see “Blink Twice,” “Challengers” and some other non-horror films included in this category.)
That factor, combined with the fact that this is a sequel, makes “Smile 2” lost in a sea of horror.
I will admit I liked this one marginally better that the first “Smile,” but only because of some of the fame-inspired aspects, like some spectacularly creepy dancers and the ending.
Otherwise, I could take or leave “Smile 2.” I will take the strong performance by Naomi Scott as Skye Riley, a popular singer who is trying to recover her career after a tragic accident and a battle with addiction.
The thing I like most about the “Smile” films is that they play more on the psychological aspect of horror, and this sequel definitely delivers on that.
One thing I could probably leave is the amount of gore. If you’re not a bloody horror fan, this sequel is not for you.
The whole plot featured some rather predictable moments and a rather rushed and seemingly tacked together last third, with a sloppy excuse for some of the plot points.
If you’re a horror fan or you enjoy films about the downside of fame, I recommend checking out “Smile 2.” Otherwise, it is safe to pass on this sequel.
