“The Outrun” (2024)

Saoirse Ronan is great as usual in “The Outrun.”

She plays Rona, a young alcoholic woman trying to turn her life around.

Much of the film lies on Ronan’s shoulders as Rona, with no big supporting roles and much of the film spent on her own.

With this singular focus, the film can at times come off as a little boring.

Unlike some of the more memorable roles Ronan’s had in films like “Lady Bird” and “Little Women,” this performance is much more calculated and quiet. Sure, Rona has her outburst moments, but like I said earlier, there are many scenes where she is just alone with her thoughts or being slow and observant of the world around her.

While I can appreciate a character who takes time do that, I’m not sure how well it translates to a film.

The film does rely heavily on flashbacks to different points in character’s life, sometimes making it a bit confusing to understand the plot, but little choices, like the color of Rona’s hair, help signify the different points in her life.

If you’re a fan of Ronan and/or quiet character studies, I recommend watching “The Outrun.” Otherwise, you can probably skip it.
