“Unstoppable” (2024)
In terms of based-on-a-true-story underdog sports films, “Unstoppable” brings nothing new to the subgenre.
The only great part of the film is Jharrel Jerome’s performance as Anthony Robles, a champion wrestler who was born with one leg.
“Unstoppable” follows Anthony’s rough transition from high school to college as he faces roadblocks to achieving his goals of making his first-choice wresting school and an abusive father figure.
Jennifer Lopez plays Anthony’s mom, Judy, and Bobby Cannavale plays his father, Rich. Both of them feel like they are just going through the motions, playing hollow versions of characters everyone has seen in these movies and characters they’ve played before.
If you want to skip this mediocre sports film and see Jerome’s talents elsewhere, I recommend checking out “When They See Us,” “I’m a Virgo” and “Moonlight.” I’m convinced he is one of the best actors working today.
