“We Live in Time” (2024)

“We Live in Time” is a beautiful little love story anchored by the unbelievable chemistry of two very charismatic movie stars.

Florence Pugh is Almut and Andrew Garfield is Tobias in this romance film that jumps back and forth in time to give a full picture of their romantic relationship.

Almut is a chef and restaurateur, while Tobias is an office worker at the cereal company Weetabix. With both of them, especially Almut, having food-related careers, I got very hooked into “We Live in Time” pretty easily. On top of their jobs, many of the other key scenes also take place in restaurants or in their home kitchens.

What I appreciated most about the movie is how realistic the acting and dialogue are. Sure, there are some “this only happens in a movie” scenarios happening in “We Live in Time,” but watching Garfield and Pugh act how people I know would act in these situations only adds to the film’s charm.

Garfield has taken a lot of interesting (and mostly successful) swings in his career, and I think this is by far his most subdued role. He pulls it off incredibly well.

Pugh carries a lot of the film’s emotional arc. She takes the strong supporting work she did in “Little Women” and brings it to the forefront in this leading role.

As much as this film is built to be a “weeper,” I also laughed incredibly hard at different moments throughout the movie. These two ends of the romantic film spectrum intermix to build a bittersweet feeling once the lights go up at the end.

I rarely have the urge to watch a movie again after I’ve just seen it, but that is what I felt as I was exiting the screening of “We Live in Time.” I think it is safe to say I will watch it again soon and maybe even feature it in a food pairing on my blog.
