“Y2K” (2024)

Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst being in two nostalgia-filled 2024 A24 horror films was not on my bingo card, but here we are.

While he plays a character in “I Saw the TV Glow,” he plays a version of himself in “Y2K.”

This nostalgia ride centers on Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison), two unpopular teenagers who decide to go all out for New Year’s Eve 1999, drinking and hitting up a party to bring in the new millennium.

Plenty of party fouls happen as the clock strikes midnight, with computers and electronics going on a murderous rampage.

A group of survivors from the party embark on a journey to get safe and figure out if there is anything they can do to stop this digital destruction.

As someone who was 13 when we jumped from 1999 to 2000, I found a lot to love about this movie, starting with the soundtrack and the references to movies of the era like “Can’t Hardly Wait” (which was on repeat for me).

Martell and Rachel Zegler (as Laura) do a great job of carrying the film, but the story does fall a little flat and feel a little hollow, like it is just a string of gags and Easter eggs meant for those of us who were teens at the time to enjoy.

Ultimately, “Y2K” is a fun sci-fi horror romp through millennial nostalgia that made me laugh and cringe in all the right places.
