“You Gotta Believe” (2024)
For baseball fans, “You Gotta Believe” really gets to the heart of the game.
Based on a true story, “You Gotta Believe” follows a lackluster little league team from Fort Worth, Texas, as they turn things around to enter the 2002 Little League World Series in honor of their assistant coach, Bobby (Luke Wilson), who was just diagnosed with cancer.
“You Gotta Believe” does a good job of balancing what the coaches are going through while also letting you get to know the kids and their team dynamic. As Bobby’s son, Robert, Michael Cash does a serviceable job of investing a lot of heart into the team and the movie.
As someone who is not into sports, I came to this movie for Wilson and Greg Kinnear, who plays the head coach, Jon. To the surprise of no one, they are both good at helping move the story forward, even if Kinnear falters a bit in his attempt to pull of a Texas accent.
By the finale game, even I found myself at the edge of my seat, rooting hard for these kids.
While the emotional arc is satisfying, I found some of the technical aspects like the cinematography to be a little off, and none of the performances really blew me away.
While this movie might not be my favorite of the year, I’m sure that baseball fans will take it to heart, as I alluded to up top.
