Turn My Tummy

The lyric “They don’t turn my tummy the way you do” is part of the chorus to “Nobody Like U” by 4*TOWN, the boy band in the animated film “Turning Red.”

These spicy broccoli tofu dumplings turn my tummy in the best way possible. This recipe makes 8-ish “servings” and is vegan.

Ingredients
1 package firm or extra firm tofu, drained/pressed & cubed
1 bag frozen broccoli
0.5 cups less sodium tamari
2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
1 package vegan wonton or dumpling wrappers

Instructions
Put the frozen broccoli in your blender and blend it up.

Once the broccoli is chopped, add the cubed tofu, tamari and red pepper flakes. Blend until a chunky, paste-like filling is formed.

Place a small spoonful of the filling in a wrapper. Seal the edges of the wrapper together with a little water. Repeat until you’ve used the whole package of wrappers.

Preheat your air fryer to 390°F for 3 minutes.

Put 1 layer of dumplings into the air fryer and cook at 390°F for 6 minutes, turning them at 3 minutes.

Repeat the frying steps until all of your dumplings are cooked.

Enjoy with the dipping sauce of your choice or on their own (my preference) while you watch “Turning Red.”

The Easy Route
Find some frozen dumplings to heat up at home or place a special order for some to be delivered to you.

If you go the homemade route, it might also be a little faster to cook them in the microwave vs. an air fryer.

The Pairing
“Turning Red” is one of my favorite films of 2022, and it hit me right in the nostalgia as the lead character is an awkward, nerdy, boy band-obsessed teenager in the early 2000s, just like I was in the early 2000s.

The film follows Mei (Rosalie Chiang) as she discovers that hitting puberty in her family means she turns into a red panda.

She works with her parents (Sandra Oh, Orion Lee) and extended family (Wai Ching Ho, Lori Tan Chinn, Lillian Lim) to tame the panda and lessen its appearances.

Meanwhile, Mei and her friends (Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ava Morse) decide to exploit the cuteness of her red panda alter ego to generate income to pay for 4*TOWN tickets.

“Turning Red” is one of the best depictions of being 12-14 that I’ve ever seen on screen. Down to the PG-13 drawings Mei draws under her bed at the beginning of the movie, I could very much relate to her character.

I could go into more detail, but I don’t want to spoil the movie for you.
